Sample Videos and Music:
Below is a collection of Madonna's best songs and videos...
Enjoy!
Included is a song analysis and video analysis for 2 of the videos!

4 Minutes (feat Justin Timberlake and Timbaland)

Song's First Impression: This song is signature Madonna. Catchy lyrics, a beat you can dance to, and an interesting set of instruments in the back. While this song may not be the most complicated song in the world, it's hard to deny that it is very catchy. Using lots of electronic sounds and background and creating a good play off of the instruments and lyrics, Madonna creates an easy dance tune.
Instrumentation: The tension at the beginning is interesting, but it may be repeated a FEW too many times...maybe if Timbaland had switched it up a little bit to keep us interested and wondering what's happening after 4 minutes I would have been far more interested in what Timbaland was saying. By using repetition on electronic instruments and overlapping one over another a little bit to make you anticipate what is going to happen. Great rhythm and beat in the song, though it is very repetitive and hardly changes at all. Unfortunately with hardly any change in the melody and beat, by the end of 4 minutes I'm ready for the song to be over.

Hook: The hook to me was the interesting (what sounds like to me) trumpets, though they more are electronic sounding. It definitely sticks in your head. Of course it makes me like the whole song because when combined with the heard hitting beat it makes you want to dance. A little bit more diverse melodies would have been nice to keep you completely and wholeheartedly interested in the song even after 4 minutes though.

Wash: I think this song actually has a good establishment of tone and feeling from the beginning because the instruments chosen sound very foreboding. There's a bit of drama and anticipation that stems from that for sure, making the listener interested in what's going to happen. Unfortunately I'm not sure that there's enough that happens in the song to leave the listener feeling truly fulfilled with the song by the end. However, the instruments (and especially random choir vocals) do create a good wash that leaves you excited about what is going to happen!
Part that Rise Up or Accent: There is a part within the song where it sounds a like a choir with a trumpet in the background driving it. It replaces the original techno trumpet sound mentioned earlier. This melody rises up during the song's chorus to create some tension during the song and makes it a little more fresh. It also makes you wonder what is going to come next.

Good Lyrics: Unfortunately while the song title and chorus promises a good concept of lyrics, the overall impression of the lyrics is that they could be better. They are a little flat and lacking meaning. However the rhythmic way that the lyrics are spoken/sung during the song help to emphasize the driving beat and melody. In this song it's easily apparent that the lyrics take backseat to the instruments. I must say though...the tick tock part is very catchy and fun to sing along to...

Excerpt of lyrics: "If you want it, you already got it
If you thought it, it better be what you want
If you feel it, it must be real just
Say the word and imma give you what you want

Madonna: Time is waiting
Justin: We only got 4 minutes to save the world

Madonna: No hesitating
Madonna: Grab a boy
Justin: Grab a girl
Madonna: Time is waiting
Justin: We only got 4 minutes to save the world
Madonna: No hesitating
Justin: We only got 4 minutes, 4 minutes

Keep it up, keep it up, don’t be a pri, hey
Madonna, uh
You gotta get in line, hop
Tick tock tick tock tick tock
That’s right, keep it up, keep it up, don’t be a pri, hey
Madonna, uh
You gotta get in line, hop
Tick tock tick tock tick tock''

Simplicity: the song's melody and lyrics are incredibly simple...part of what makes it get stuck in your head for the whole day! I know that I'll be singing "All I got is fo' minutes *fricka fricka* fo' minutes" for the rest of the day...From a standpoint on simplicity, it might have been a little too simple and repetitive. If their intention was to produce a dance single that would become extremely popular then they did a good job, because(even if you've never heard it before) after about a minute of the song you basically know the whole next 3 minutes.

Final Judgement: I'd give it an 8.2 out of 10. The lyrics just aren't good enough for me...but they sure are catchy. Same with the song instruments (I find myself singing their part also sometimes...). I am a little disappointed that Madonna has only become the epitame of pop music today though...she used to be edgy (though I'm not sure how I'd respond if Madonna was still edgy at her age).

Papa Don't Preach

Lucky Star

Material Girl

I really like this song and video, but it makes me a little mad inside that she copies Marilyn all the way through it, so I'm not going to analyze it, because it isn't really original at all!

Oh Father

First Impression: The entire song is haunting and the video has a great concept that matches the lyrics. The shots and way that shadows are used to reveal things is very moving. I found this video extremely powerful...probably the best Madonna video I've seen.

Concept/Performance: The video was definitely focused on a story. Madonna looks great in it and sincere while she's singing the lyrics. I can sense that Madonna was really feeling the emotion of the story as she sang the lyrics. The story is very very good. My interpretation of it was that little Madonna (who loves to dance) lost her mother when she was a child. Her father changed and became short-tempered and stressed after his wife's death. A detail that I found especially moving in the story is the shadows. They show the characters real emotion even if they aren't showing it at the time...really great. Also, the way that Madonna reveals she WAS the young child is done well through the flipping of the past and the present. The scene where the little girl runs to the giant door and can't get out is so powerful and shows you that when she was young she had no escape (other than dance).I'm not sure what it meant when it showed the mother's lips stitched together because I didn't get a sense that the father was abusive to the mother from the story. Perhaps it was a sign that her mother couldn't speak out for her, or the fact that silence forever means death. It seemed to be personal to Madonna, I'm not sure if her father ever became violent with her after her mother had passed also. It was good to see Madonna show a deeper side and another emotion besides love and lust. The end of the video was actually uplifting...which is more than I can say I predicted. It is obvious that Madonna finds her father (now old and sorry for his previous actions) again standing over her mother's grave, and she forgives him for everything that he had done. I also found the acting very very well done, especially by the little girl showing emotions like pain and fear.

Lighting: While this video was shot in black and white, the lighting is impeccable. The harshness between the shadows and the light parts are done well, showing innocence and darkness together. Madonna looks great in the video and really stands out. The lighting definitely highlights everything great about this video, especially the sets and the actors.

Camera Shots: Every camera shot in this place is very artistic and well done. The scene where the pearls are falling from the broken necklace is beautifully done, and I like how the loose pearls keep coming back into the video also. The funeral procession scene with the shadows is very well shot also. Many of the shots in this video are stunning and breathtaking...I find it even more so because it is in black and white. I especially like the continuous shot at about 1:58. The way it moves from her father to Madonna singing on the bed is really great and interesting. I also really like the different angles and movements of the shots to keep it interesting.
As for the repetition of shots, I dont' think that they repeat any shots EXACTLY but they have similar shots used at different times. For example, the shots with the pearls bouncing and rolling away are used throughout the video, the shots of the little girl dancing are very similar and used in different parts of the video, and the shots with the shadows are a recurring theme. This video seems to be more timeless than most of her other videos that are shot unclear and in strange lighting. The shots make every actor and actress look great, Madonna and the little girl especially. A few shots are a little unfocused, but I'm not sure if that is just because it is an internet version or not...

Editing: The way the shots are edited together make for a flowing video, but not a boring one. There is a constant change of camera angles, but it isn't overwhelming. There aren't just "random" clips of things, each clip or shot we see has a meaning and purpose behind it. Each shot helps to create depth and purpose to the story.

The Band: Madonna decided to take a backseat on this video and didn't necessarily star in EVERY second of the video, nor did she dance or seduce anyone (a good change). Madonna did sing in parts and play the older version of the young girl, which she did well...though I don't think her acting skills were up to par with the little girl's to be honest. I think Madonna was highlighted beautifully in a moving and emotional video such as this...I like that she had a story and it wasn't JUST her acting it.

Design: The set is fantastic, as are the clothes and styling of the actors. This part was also well done!

Final Judgement: I gove this video a 9.5/10. I found it beautiful, and everytime I watch it I notice something new about it. This video (compared to many others of today and the past) is VERY well done, as are the lyrics and song. Just a great job overall!
Influences, Movements, and Trends.
WHY IS MADONNA IMPORTANT?!
Influenced By: Madonna was obviously influenced and inspired by Marilyn...though I feel like she didn't really focus on the classiness Marilyn was always known for...but more just the style and look of Marilyn. Madonna definitely looked her best when she had platinum blonde waves and her make-up done like Marilyn. I can see why she didn't adopt the look though because people would have just called her a copy-cat and she wouldn't have made it very far. As for other influences, Madonna has said herself that she was influenced by the mo-town sound when she was a little girl like Diana Ross and Stevie Wonder. Her three favourite albums as a kid were Strawberry Alarm Clock's "Incense and Peppermint", Gary Puckett's "Young Girl", and The Box Tops' "The Letter". She was also encouraged and influenced by her mother's death and her ambition to become famous for dancing. Her dance teacher Christopher Flynn also helped influence where her life and skills would lead her later.
I think what made Madonna a little special was that she didn't really try to copy anyone. She liked to make up things as she went and had a different style almost every day! From cowboy hats to leggings to white gloves, Madonna has done it all. I think her biggest motivation was just to be herself.

Influenced: Madonna has influenced many artists today. Gwen Stefani admits that she had been influenced by Madonna and loved her attitude and style. Jessica Simpson also admitted that Madonna was a huge influence on her when she was young and influenced her to sing and dance.Movements & Trends: Of course Madonna ran the 80s show. Decked out in her layers, mesh, lace, jelly bracelets, plastic bling, and leggings Madonna WAS the 80s. She created the "beautifully attractive bad girl" image, while still combining retro aspects of society's past trends that made women "beautiful" such as the cone bra. Madonna has helped to create a different frame of mind in society about sexuality and what it means.
Madonna herself actually got caught up in the Kaballah movement (guess we all somehow join a movement)
Madonna continues to produce new music, though let's face it she isn't quite as edgy as she used to be. When Madonna was in her prime though, she ruled the music/entertainment industry. People can say all the bad things that they want about her, but there's no denying that she has become a superpower and legend in the music industry. EVERYONE knows Madonna.
Madonna in the New Millennium (2000-2008)
Madonna's career started to cool down a bit in the new millennium, as did her attitude. While she's still a prominent force in the entertainment industry, Madonna doesn't call the shots or set the trends anymore.

2000
Madonna meets Guy Ritchie in 1998 and they begin to date. Madonna later gives birth to Rocco Ritchie on August 11, 2000. Guy Ritchie and Madonna wed on December 22 in Scotland. Madonna also produces 3 successful U.S. singles on her newest studio album "Music" ("Music", "Don't Tell Me" and "What it Feels Like to Be a Girl"). She stars in the movie The Next Best Thing and contributes two songs to the soundtrack which results in one becoming an international hit ("American Pie").

2001
Madonna begins the Drowned World Tour, her first world tour since 1993. It was the highest grossing tour of the world that year. She also releases her second greatest hits album "GHV2"

Ritchie directs the movie Swept Away and casts Madonna as the lead actress. The movie is a box office flop but Madonna later releases "Die Another Day"- a new single for the 20th James Bond movie being created- and it is a success. It was nominated for a Golden Globe award for Best Original Song. Madonna also stars in in the play Up For Grabs.

2003
Madonna releases the lowest selling album of her career "American Life" which was themed around American Society which featured her feelings on the Iraq war. At the MTV video music awards later that year Madonna performs "Hollywood" and "Like a Virgin" with music industry powerhouses Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and Missy Elliot. Christina and Britney were dressed like Madonna was during her performance in the 80s at the very first ever MTV video music awards. Madonna (acting as the groom) kisses both Christina and Britney on stage during the performance. This results in a media frenzy.
Madonna also releases her children's book English Roses this year.

2004
Madonna begins
her Re-Invention world tour. It also became the highest grossing tour of 2004, making close to $125 million. Rolling Stone ranks Madonna as #36 on their "100 Greatest Artists of All Time" list. She also releases a documentary about her Re-Ivention tour entitled "I'm Going to Tell You a Secret".

"Hung Up" reached #1 song in a record breaking 45 different countries. This hit was followed by three others ("Sorry", "Get Together" and "Jump").

2006
Madonna becomes the model for H&M worldwide and designs a track suit as part of the deal. She also embarks on her world tour titled Confessions this year and spars controversy with the use
of religious symbols such as the crucifix and crown of thorns. Vatican officials accused her use of the crown and religious symbols as an attack on Catholicism. In October, Madonna adopts 13 month old David Banda from Malawi (and shockingly recieves criticism from the press). PETA later criticizes Madonna for wearing a Chinchilla fur coat in a London resteraunt in December.
2007
Madonna performs at the London Live Earth concert and departs from her contract with Warner Bros. Records and signs a ten year contract with Live Nation. In August Madonna embarked on her Sticky and Sweet tour and i
s grosses over $280 million.

The Chronicles of Madonna:
A Life Story (1958-2000)

1958-1977
: Baby Nonni...
Madonna is born on August 16, 1958. She is the first daughter of Madonna and Tony Ciccione. Part Italian and part French Canadian, she is given the nickname Nonni to avoid confusion with her mother's name. Nonni was the third of six children (Martin, Anthony, Paula Mae, Christopher, and Melanie). After losing her mother to breast cancer in 1963 and watching her father remarry, Nonni convinces her father to let her take ballet lessons and escapes to the world of dance. She later attends Rochester Adams High School and becomes a straight-A student and a member of the cheerleading squad. While studying under her private tutor Christopher Flynn, Madonna receives a dance scholarship to the University of Michigan after graduating from high school.

1978: Hello Big City!
Madonna attended the University of Michigan for two years before her ballet tutor Flynn persuaded her to drop out and move to New York to try her luck. Flat out broke and with only the clothes on her back, Madonna lived in ramshackle apartments and worked at Dunkin' Donuts and with modern dance troupes. Speaking of her move to New York, Madonna said, "It was the first time I'd ever taken a plane, the first time I'd ever gotten a taxi cab. I came here with $35 in my pocket. It was the bravest thing I'd ever done."

1979: Hitting up the Music Scene.
Barely making ends meet as a musician and model, one of Madonna's boyfriends teach her how to play the drums and guitar. She performs in several rock and punk bands. While performing as a background dancer for Patrick Hernandez (a french disco artist), she meets and becomes romantically involved with Dan Gilroy. Madonna forms her first rock band with Gilroy called The Breakfast Club. Then after launching a band called Emmy with later boyfriend Stephen Bray, Madonna begins to produce dance songs alongside Bray. Madonna's songs became popular in the local clubs of New York and they lead her to a solo contract with Sire Records.

1982: Encore...Encore!
Madonna signs a singles contract with Sire Records and releases her first song titled "Everybody". It was a crowd pleaser and it led to her meeting the in-demand DJ at the time John "Jellybean" Benitez. Benitez agrees to produce her next single "Holiday". Madonna and Benitez continue to date for 2 years before going their separate ways. The release of "Holiday" led to an appearance on Dick Clark's show American Bandstand. This performance gives her the career the spotlight and lands her on the dance charts top 20 category, though Madonna was attracting very little press attention.

1983: Success on the Borderline?
Madonna's releases her first album, which is self-titled. It includes mega hits "Lucky Star", "Holiday" and "Borderline". The album's success was overwhelming. It had 13 consecutive Top 5 hits...this kind of success has only been topped by Elvis and The Beatles.

1984: Like A Virgin
Madonna releases her videos for her hit songs from her first album. She began attracting media attention after getting airtime on MTV because of her style and attitude. Madonna's image consisted of jewelry bearing the Christian cross, lace tops, skirts over capri pants, fishnet stockings, loads of cheap jewelry, and teased bleach blonde hair. Her look becomes a huge trend throughout the 80s and her behavior in performances and videos also becomes an influence among other young women.

Before releasing her second follow-up album, Madonna performs at the very first MTV Video Awards on top of a huge cake in a large white bustier and veil while
bearing her signature "Boy Toy" belt and crucifix jewelry. Madonna releases her follow up album "Like A Virgin" on November 12. It hits No. 1 on the U.S. albums chart and continues to top the charts for 6 weeks. "Like A Virgin" sells 12 million copies worldwide and is now listed by the Rock and Roll hall of fame as one of the Definitive 200 Albums of All Time.

1985: It's A Material World.
Madonna meets Sean Penn on the set of her video for "Material Girl", in which she impersonates Marilyn Monroe from the video "Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend". The pair are photographed together later at a video club in New York. Penn travels to Michigan a few weeks later and meets Madonna's family. Later at a concert in L.A., Madonna meets Penn's parents. A small wedding of about 200 people follows that August.

Madonna breaks into mainstream film starring in Desperately Seeking Susan with Rosanna Arquette. Playing a street urchin with a wry sense of humour, Madonna's style in the movie was quickly copied by teens across America. Wearing leggings, lace gloves and bellybutton shirts, girls across America were caught up in the Madonna craze. The film also introduced another single "Into the Groove" which went on to become her first number one single in the UK.
In July, black and white pictures of a nude Madonna surfaced and are published in Penthouse and Playboy without her consent. When legal action failed to stop the pictures from being published Madonna became defiant and had no sorry words for her actions. When performing at the Live Aid concert, Madonna mocked the press by saying she would not take off her jacket in case they decided to "hold it against me ten years from now".

Madonna also begins her first U.S. tour entitled The Virgin Tour alongside the Beastie Boys this year.

1986: Papa Don't Preach!
Madonna's new husband beats David Wolinski (Madonna's pal and songwriter) and is let off with a thousand dollar fine and a year's worth of probation. Months after the ordeal, Madonna and Penn co-star in the Hollywood flop Shanghai Surprise together.

Madonna also finds time to record and release her third album "True Blue". The album includes a ballad ("Live to Tell") Madonna wrote for the film At Close Range which Sean Penn stars in. Rolling Stone says the album "sounds as if it comes from the heart", and it went on to produce 5 singles on the Billboard Charts: "Live to Tell", "Open Your Heart", "Papa Don't Preach", "La Isla Bonita" and "True Blue". "Papa Don't Preach" also becomes a very popular music video on MTV this year.

1987: Who's That Girl?
As Madonna is finishing her tour Who's That Girl?, she stops in Turin Italy to perform. It was here she had her first run-in with the Vatican when Pope John Paul II urges the Italian public to stay away from her performances as Madonna sinfully mixed Catholicism and sexuality together (her trademark).

Madonna also releases a remix album of her past hits later this year which includes the hit "You Can Dance".

1988: All The World's A Stage.
Madonna decides to star in the play Speed-the-Plow as Karen the secretary. Meanwhile a town named Pacentro, Italy begins construction of a 4 metre commemorative statue of Madonna in a bustier. It is built to celebrate that her relatives had lived in Pacentro.

1989: Like a Prayer.
Four year after marrying Sean Penn, Madonna files for divorce for the second time. In 1987 she had chosen to withdraw her first divorce threat.

Madonna releases her fourth album titled "Like a Prayer". It was co-produced by Stephen Bray and Patrick Leonard. It sells seven million copies worldwide and produced three Top 5 singles.

Madonna signs an endorsement deal with Pepsi for 5 million dollars and feature her in a commercial featuring her new song "Like a Prayer" Two months later Madonna releases her "Like a Prayer" music video. It features the starlet singing in front of burning crosses and stigmata. Pepsi was forced to end their sponsorship deal with Madonna after they could not convince the public that the commercial had nothing that was inappropriate, though Madonna keeps the cash.
Madonna has another run-in with the Vatican
when he condemns her "Like a Prayer" video publicly.

Madonna throws a party for art world types at her younger brother's New York loft and invites John F. Kennedy Jr. Many people at the party later tell the press that Madonna spent a lot of the party trying to get comfortable with John, but he left later alone to go to dinner with his girlfriend.

1990: Justify her Love?
Madonna stars as "Breathless" Mahoney in the film Dick Tracy based on the comic books. She starred opposite Warren Beatty and they began a short-lived romantic relationship. Madonna wins an Oscar for her song "Sooner or Later" in the film and also debuts her new album

"I'm Breathless" which features her eighth number one U.S. single, "Vogue".

Madonna is given the title "America's Smartest Business Woman" in October and Forbes estimated she has made about 125 million dollars between 1985 and 1990.

Madonna begins her Blonde Ambition Tour but again runs into controversial issues when her stage performance is labelled as sinful. The Pope again urges the Italian public to boyc ott her concert performances.

Madonna releases her first greatest hits albums entitled "The Immaculate Collection". It also introduced two new hit singles "Rescue Me" and "Justify My Love", which became a number one hit dance song in the U.S. The video was banned from airing on MTV because it was deemed too sexual.

1991: Truth or Dare...?
Madonna steps out on the red carpet decked out in 20 million dollars worth of Harry Winston diamonds. She walks the carpet with new friend Michael Jackson and stays with him the whole night. At the after party she meets up with Warren Beatty.

Starring in her very first documentary film, Madonna candidly tapes the many intimate moments during her Blonde Ambition Tour and her personal life. It was titled Truth or Dare (In Bed with Madonna outside of North America) and received an R rating. The press have a field day, calling Madonna "a natural egomaniac whom stardom completes" and even Beatty said "She doesn't want to live off-camera!".

1992: A League of Her Own.
Madonna becomes a serious business woman when she establishes her own entertainment company named Maverick (consisting film produciton, a record comp any, music publishing, television, merchandising and book publishing divisions) with the help of Time Warner in a joint venture. Madonna's first release from the company was Sex, a book which had sexually explicit images taken by fashion photographer Steven Meisel (one of Madonna's regular photographers). The book cause a kerfuffle in the press and stirred up some controverst, but Sex sells 500 000 copies in the U.S. alone. Soon after she releases her fifth studio album entitled "Erotica". The album produced 6 singles; "Deeper and Deeper", "Fever", "Bad Girl", "Rain", "Bye Bye Baby" and it's title track "Erotica" which peaked at #3 on the U.S. Hot 100 tracks.

Madonna also stars in the classic baseball film A League of Their Own as Mae Mordabito, a tough-talking Italian Am erican girl not unlike herself. "This Used to By My Playground", the film's theme song, hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100.

1993: Introducing...the Girlie Show.
Madonna stars in two films, one being the thriller Body of Evidence, which was disliked by critics and most audiences. The second movie is the Maverich Films production. Titled Dangerous Game it is given some good reviews for Madonna's performance even though it is released straight-to-video.

Madonna also embarks on The Girlie Show World Tour near the end of '93. Dressed as a dominatrix during performances, her first ever show in Israel is protested by Orthadox Jews.

1994: Hello Mr. Letterman.
Madonna releases the single "I'll Remember" for the film With Honours. Later that year she also releases her sixth studio album "Bedtime Stories" which was a completely different approach than her previous album "Erotica". "Bedtime Stories" produces four singles; "Take A Bow", "Bedtime Story", "Secret", and "Human Nature".

Later in the year, Madonna appears on the Late Show with David Lette rman and creates an infamous performance. Using 4 letter words that needed to be censored, refusing to leave when Letterman wants to end the interview, including numerous sexual inuendos, and asking Letterman to smell her underwear, Madonna seemed to be a bit attention starved.

Madonna also begins to date Tupac Shakur, a famous rapper.

1995: A Year to Remember?
The release of "Something to Remember" (a collection of Madonna's ballads) features the hit song "You'll See" and her cover of Marvin Gaye's song "I Want You".

1996: Golden Globes are a Girl's Best Friend

Madonna wins a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy for her role as Eva Peron in the film Evita. She also wins a Golden Globe and Academy Award forBest Orignal Song From a Motion Picture.

Lourdes Maria Ciccione Leon comes into the world on October 14th. Madonna shares her daughter with her personal trainer and the father, Carlos Leon. Withing a year of Lourdes' birth, the relationship between Carlos and Madonna ends.

1997 & 1998: Is that a Ray of Light?
Madonna releases a studio album in 1998 titl ed "Ray of Light". It debuted at number 2 in United States and the album produces two U.S. top 5 singles. These include "Ray of Light" and "Frozen". The album also wins 3 Grammys and is used by Microsoft in their advertising campain that indroduces Windows XP. The album is banned in Beligium because of accusational plagiarism issues from Salvatore Acquaviva's '93 song "Ma Vie Fout L'camp".

1999: Working Undercover.
Madonna follows her success from the previous album with a single titled "Beautiful Stranger" recorded for the upcoming Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me Soundtrack. On the Billboard Hot 100 it reached #9 by airplay time only!
